Experiment Geotargets Member Station Headlines on NPR.org Home Page

Mar 20, 2012

If you visit NPR.org today you might notice something different -- local news headlines on the home page. What you are seeing is an experiment that aims to build awareness of Member station's local news efforts through the placement of localized headlines on NPR.org and through engagement with Facebook. The test launched this morning and will run over the next four weeks.

Following the success of an experiment in which we geotargeted local KPLU content on the NPR Facebook page, we have submitted a Knight Foundation News Challenge proposal for a tool that will enable us to expand the test.

Are you interested in getting started with Google Analytics, but not sure where to begin?  Using GA, but still have questions about your implementation?  Well, you aren’t alone.  In our recent webinar we covered everything from how to set up your account to how to start customizing with advanced tracking.

The detailed 1 hour presentation includes:

Are you looking to change your current CMS or are you on the PI Platform? Check out Core Publisher.

Note: If you are a Public Platform, Newsroom, or Arts user, we will need to migrate you to Core Publisher by the end of September 2012, as NPR Digital Services will no longer support these modules.

Introduction to Webcast Metrics

Mar 12, 2012

Last week NPR Digital Services officially added Triton Digital's Webcast Metrics service to our suite of analytics offerings. A webinar was held to introduce the service to NPR member stations and to answer questions. Needless to say, a good time was had by all!

As promised, here's the full video of the presentation and discussion:

I’m pleased to announce that we have hired Todd Mundt as Editorial Director for NPR Digital Services. Many of you may know Todd from his extensive public media experience in news, programming and, most notably, in the transformation of public media newsrooms to meet emerging digital opportunities. He’s a great addition to the Digital Services team.

Dispatches From a First-Time Live-Tweeter

Feb 27, 2012

WUSF reporter Bobbie O'Brien live-tweeted for the first time (although you would think she has done this hundreds of times before) earlier this month. During the Florida event — a presentation by Tuskegee airmen -- O'Brien sent 27 tweets and snapped five photos, while simultaneously prepping for her radio story.

Managing Tags for Greater Searchability and Sanity

Feb 27, 2012

Tags are important for adding visibility to your content with your audience and search engines. They can also be used incorrectly and exclude important stories. Too many tags can create eyesores and a loss of focus

Michigan Radio has developed a way to manage tags and streamline the process for their reporters. Senior producer Mark Brush created an in-house guideline that could be applicable to many stations. He's been kind enough to share it with us.

How to add tags to a post

Tags help us create and point to a collections of stories, and they also help someone else find a collection of stories on the website.

When someone clicks on the "Mitt Romney" tag, for example, they are saying to themselves, “I want to see all the stories Michigan Radio has done on Mitt Romney."

So it's important for us to try to have consistent tags for the stories we post. We want to thread all of the relevant stories to that tag.

If you have multiple tags for the same topic (i.e., "Romney" or  "Gov. Romney," instead of sticking with “Mitt Romney”), the reader will miss important stories.

Madalyn Painter from St. Louis Public Radio recently shared some impressive numbers around their digital audience growth over the past year for their website and audio streams.

Comparing this January to last, our number of unique visitors to the site has increased by 90 percent. Additionally, the number of people listening to our online streams has more than doubled.

Measuring your audience and engagement: Updates from Analytics team

Last week was our monthly analytics webinar, where we gather together the top insights across the system on both audience and engagement. As you might expect, election coverage was a big focus for the system this month, and we broke down audience consumption of election coverage, as well as its impact on retention rate. And the results are significant: politics and election coverage had more than double the one-week retention rate of the previous 12 weeks. We also launched two big features to...
