Core Publisher and Responsive Web Design: Roadmap

Mar 24, 2014

NPR Digital Services is in the process of launching a responsive redesign of Core Publisher.  In addition to the alpha and beta pilots, all Core Publisher stations will get new features over the next few months as part of our core goal to provide value to stations throughout the redesign process. Some features such as new slideshows are related to the redesign efforts, while others  such as improvements to the “auto retrieve and categorize tool” are not.

(This is article three of three. Read about Why We Are Doing a Redesign Now and the Redesign Goals for more info.)

For ALL Core Publisher Stations

Spring 2014

  • more image alignment options (completed)
  • slideshows in a lightbox (available 3/27/14)
  • improved “retrieve and categorize API content” tool (content will be publishable to more than categories)
  • additional sponsorship opportunities on program and topic pages

Summer 2014

new modular homepage functionality

  • “free” hp blocks
  • ability to order stories in the mini river of news

Responsive Rollouts

  • responsive Story Pages
  • responsive "Aggregation" Pages (programs, topics, tags, categories, people)
  • responsive "River-style" Homepage

Target sites: sites that are news blogs, more focused on relaying news than general station information

Beta Pilot, Late Summer 2014

Feature Set Includes:

  • all Alpha features
  • responsive modular homepage
  • persistent player for streaming

Target sites: sites focused on sharing station information on the homepage with more mobile traffic than the average

Open to All, Fall 2014/Winter 2015

The timeline for onboarding to the new responsive theme is TBD as of today. We will know more as we get closer to the fall.

Worth noting: In our initial redesign phases, underwriting will remain the same in Core Publisher. 300x250s in the right rail, and a 728x90 in the nav area on desktop and tablet. On mobile, there is one 320x50 available.
