Public Events, a legacy Public Interactive platform for handling events, has served many stations for more than 15 years. However, it’s become increasingly difficult and expensive to maintain such an old platform, and Digital Services will no longer support it as of September 2016. To help stations continue serving their audiences with information about events, we built Community Calendar — and we’ve integrated it with Core Publisher in a way that provides significant improvements over the older platform. Collaborating With Stations
At every step of the process, Digital Services has collaborated with stations to ensure that we are making good decisions and prioritizing the most important features. We started by speaking with people at WYSO, Spokane Public Radio, KPLU, SDPB, and Northern Public Radio to understand their needs and workflows. We asked others, including WWNO, NHPR, and St. Louis Public Radio, to give us feedback on initial wireframes — and we asked stations on social media to vote on the product’s name.
As we got closer to release, we worked KUOW, WFSU, KPBX, Michigan Radio, KRCC, and WSKG to test-run a beta release of Community Calendar. These stations gave us invaluable feedback that we’ve used to guide later-stage development decisions — and they helped our Station Relations team design a process for on-boarding and training stations that will be straightforward and easy.
