WordPress API Plugins Updated

Oct 23, 2018

Over the last month we have released updates to both of our API WordPress plugins.   Both releases include a number of bug fixes, improved usability regarding configuring the plugin, and support for PHP 7 and WordPress 4.9.  The updated versions of the plugins, along with FAQs and documentation, can be found in GitHub,, and via the plugin admin in WordPress sites.

We are pleased to announce the upcoming release (Monday, May 7, 2018) of an updated WordPress plugin (v1.7.1) for NPR’s Story API.  We’ve added new features and a number of upgrades as well, outlined below:

With APIs at the core of NPR’s digital strategy, delivering everything from station content in NPR One to NPR stories in the new NPR app, we want to improve station understanding of how APIs work and what story APIs NPR supports today.

As a follow up to our spring post about the NPR’s *API work, it’s time to talk more about our progress, goals and methodologies, and how this new content API will impact your work.

Core Publisher Update

Dear Stations,

Here's a quick update on the Core Publisher team's focus and information about a few changes we pushed this week.

Feature Updates:

  • Layout Manager - We are currently updating the layout manager for the new responsive theme. While there are no functionality changes for stations with the modular homepage, the layout manager will have a different look, which will include a scrollable bullpen.

Defects - Fixed:

Dear Stations,

Quick update on the team's focus and information about a few changes we pushed last week.

Responsive Design:

  • The team is now building homepage management tools and newly designed homepage blocks. We will be holding a webinar at the end of September to show you work completed.

Player Changes:

  • Standarized the inline audio player across all themes. This morning changed the copy to "Listen" based on station feedback.

These are questions asked during the FY2015 Core Publisher  webinar. We expect to continue adding to this list as more questions come up.

Is this Responsive Redesign phase only for certain stations?  Our station site is currently using a modular template for our homepage, not a river-style template.

NPR Digital Services is in the process of launching a responsive redesign of Core Publisher.  In addition to the alpha and beta pilots, all Core Publisher stations will get new features over the next few months as part of our core goal to provide value to stations throughout the redesign process. Some features such as new slideshows are related to the redesign efforts, while others  such as improvements to the “auto retrieve and categorize tool” are not.

2014 marks a major initiative for NPR Digital Services -- the responsive redesign of Core Publisher. With all the things we could be doing at Digital Services and all the work we could be doing on Core Publisher in particular, here’s why we are choosing to focus our resources on a responsive redesign of Core Publisher.

Just this week we held our first Core Publisher Office hour. We are using office hours to cover specific "How Tos" in Core Publisher and also have an open Q&A session,  discussing any other questions you have about how the product functions.

If you have a topic you'd like covered in the next few months, add your topic ideas here.

Over the last few sprints we have made the following updates and fixes:

  • fixed Top Referrers in Analytics Dashboard
  • moved the Core Pub codebase to Git
  • updated "170 Million" block branding
  • added program list from Composer 2
  • moved everyone to the new audio upload process
  • fixed top banner alignment

See additional details below.

Fixed Top Referrers

Core Publisher sites now have the option to access content from other stations, however there are some limitations. While you can browse another station's content, you cannot search for it.

This evening we will be pushing our latest feature on Core Pub, the updated Post Form. I will be adding FAQs here over the next few days. In the meantime I wanted to make sure every newsroom had the salient information they need to work with the new form.

Please to refer to and distribute these slides as needed, which contain the following information:

  • How do I make a slideshow?
  • Which audio will go into my podcast?
  • How do I edit audio I added the "old way"?

And as always, please contact us with any additional questions, comments, or feedback. We are all ears.

Frictionless curation meets Core Publisher and makes: Web Clip.

WHAT: As implied by its name, a web clip allows you to give your audience context around external content. With web clips you embed content from other sites onto your site and explain why you think the story is important for your audience.

We are excited to announce the launch of three stations on the alpha version of Core Publisher’s mobile-optimized website. Fantastic! But wait, what does that mean?

What are we trying to do exactly?
